The 5 Mistakes of Learning Guitar
You and I both love the classical guitar, but we are also prone to falling into some common traps. Let me ask you: do you make any of these mistakes in the practice room?
- You are working on so many different things that you finish practicing without knowing what you actually accomplished?
- You play though pieces always starting from the beginning but things start to fall apart around the half way mark
- You dabble with various pieces but never really learn any of them from beginning to end
- You don’t set yourself short, medium, and long term goals
- You take on repertoire that is too difficult
If you have ever made one of these mistakes (or several), don’t worry, you are not alone. I have taught internationally, in festivals, in masterclasses, at Ivy league universities and in living rooms, and the problem is always the same:
Repertoire that is too difficult, unstructured and unfocused practice, and either unrealistic goals or no goals at all!
If you don’t have the right material at the right time you will not only waste time and money, but you run the risk of getting so frustrated that you give up.
A solution to your problems
Classical Guitar Corner provides you with everything you need, in one place.
- A structured curriculum
- Progressive materials that follow a clear roadmap
- 5 different levels with goals and challenges laid out for you
- Comprehensive courses that not only teach you technique, but how to read music, understand music, and perform music
The single most powerful part of being a student at Classical Guitar Corner...
Who I am and why you should listen to me
My name is Simon Powis, and I am a guitarist just like you.
I am a performer and teacher of international standing. I was awarded a doctorate of music from Yale University, I have performed at Carnegie Hall, the Kennedy Center, at the GFA Symposium, and in more than 10 countries around the world in hundreds on performances.
As a teacher, I have had students accepted to Yale University, Manhattan School of Music, Sydney Conservatorium of Music, and the Mannes School of Music. I have worked with 4 year olds, 40 year olds, and quite a number of octogenarians! I studied teaching and pedagogy in London, Sydney, and at Yale University and through Classical Guitar Corner I have helped over one thousand guitarists reach their goals.
While my strength is in classical guitar I also play jazz, have toured with musicals, play mandolin in a bluegrass band and have a general love for music.
Simon Powis is the rare combination of a virtuoso guitarist and a thoughtful, forward thinking pedagogue. – Ben Verdery, Yale University.
Simon displayed outstanding sensitivity and a musical maturity that was worthy of any professional concert platform. – Huffington Post
Let me show you just how effective this curriculum is
- Give me 15 minutes and I will introduce you to 800 guitarists from around the world who understand your challenges and share your passion.
- Give me 1 day and I will show you a clear, simple roadmap that will guide you through to the next level of your ability.
- Give me 6 months and I will transform your approach to practice, performance, and progress on the classical guitar
Above are two videos submitted by an Annual Member at CGC, Barry. They are the same piece, the same guitar, and the same player 11 months apart. You will notice that not only is the speed and control further developed, the left hand technique is much more secure, the right hand tone is more consistent, and overall the performance is more musical.
Barry has taken advantage of the live seminars, regularly posts videos in the forum, and receives helpful feedback from Simon, the CGC team and the other students. He is a great example of what can be done with the membership at Classical Guitar Corner.
How it works.

Technical Routines, Repertoire Books, Scales Sets, Giuliani Right Hand Studies… they are all included in your Annual Membership.
The Masterclass Series
I have invited some of my colleagues to conduct masterclasses just for the CGC members. These in-depth masterclasses focus on repertoire and their associated techniques. The pieces chosen are from Level 3 through 5 and represent and intermediate to advanced level. Current masterclasses include Gohar Vardanyan teaching Recuerdos de la Alhambra and Kevin Gallagher teaching Llobet’s El Testament D’Amelia.
Annual members can take advantage of the Certificate Courses. These courses walk you through step by step, lesson by lesson through the entire curriculum. At the end of the course you can submit your playing to receive a certificate of completion. A wonderful way to set goals and map your progress.
Reviews of Classical Guitar Corner
“I’m having a phenomenal time and I cannot recommend it enough anyone”
“I would highly recommend this site to anyone who is approaching guitar as a beginner, intermediate, or even advanced player.”
“Simon has a structure that brings students up to a level they never thought they would achieve.”
There is a cost for not studying at CGC
What do you value more, time or money? Well, regardless of your answer you are probably going to lose both (and a lot of it!) if you don’t study with a quality guide using a structured curriculum.
Private lessons can quickly stack up into the thousands each year with rates ranging from $50 an hour to $150. It is also safe to say that a good player does not always equal a good teacher, so if you are going to study with a private teacher make sure you do some research on their teaching results first.
For me the biggest risk is losing time. Time is precious and if you study guitar with a teacher who is not both an excellent player and a dedicated teacher you run the risk of missing out on your potential.
I know the curriculum at CGC yields results, and I also know that I am dedicated to teaching here 100%. Here is an example of actual results:
John started from the very beginning with CGC and now he is playing repertoire from the end of Level 2!
Weekly lessons at a rate of $70 per lesson will run you around $3000 dollars per year (with some accounting for holidays) The cost of membership at CGC is either $50 per month or $397 for an entire year. There are other online schools but I can guarantee you that there is no other school that combines a professional player with a fully dedicated teacher. It is usually one or the other, here you get everything you need, in one place.
We put our heart and soul into this school and we are confident you are going to enjoy being a member. If you find that this site is not for you, you can let us know within thirty days of signing up, and we will give you a full refund. This guarantee means there is no risk in signing up and every reason to become a member right now.
