What to bring and prepare

  • A collapsable wire music stand (large music stands are available but if you want to practice in your room you will need your own)
  • Several pencils, pens, and some highlighters
  • A spare set of strings
  • A clip on guitar tuner (helps to tune up when other guitars are sounding around you)
  • A sweater in case it gets cold (even in the middle of Summer it can get cool on campus)
  • You can bring bottles of wine/beer and plastic cups if you would like to drink while socializing in the evenings. There is a local liquor store also.
  • Put nametags/stickers on your guitar case and music stand
  • Black outfit for the final concert (doesn’t have to be too fancy, just normal concert black)

Packing tips from a pro…

Hi Everyone,
I’m Evita, Simon’s wife, and I am a dance teacher. I thought I would also take some time to write down my list of suggested items to pack for the Summer School. I know this campus very well because I have taught there for 10 years at a Lindy Hop event called “Beantown”. Here are my recommendations for what to bring with you.
  • A bigger towel. The towel provided for you by the school is a medium size towel. If you want a larger, fluffy towel or just a second towel you may want to bring one.
  • A blanket. The bed linen that is in the rooms is very basic and rather thin. It’s not a hotel. Expect a true “dorm room” feel. So if you think you might get cold or you like to snuggle in blankets I would suggest you bring one that you like.
  • Umbrella / Rain coat. Usually the weather is phenomenal with gorgeous blue skies and nice summer breezes from the water. But one year we got poured on and it was tough to stay dry. Having at least one rain option would be good.
  • Comfortable Fashion. If anyone cares about what to wear, which I always do, I would suggest comfortable walking shoes for getting around campus and summer attire. But be sure to have a sweater, jumper, hoodie or what ever you call it for night time and air-conditioned buildings.
  • Bring your swimming outfit. You can squeeze in time to go down to the water and take a dip if you like.
  • Toiletries. You need to pack all your own soap, shampoo and hand soap. The bathrooms only come supplied with toilet paper.
I think that’s it for what I would recommend you pack. You will be fine no matter what but these are the items I have thought in past years I wish I had brought with me.
It’s going to be a great time and you will really enjoy the location, the food and of course the lessons.

Travel To Endicott College

Train

Commuter trains leave Boston from North Station

You can get to the station from the Airport and South Station (Amtrak and buses) via the subway: Here is a subway map

We will be making pick ups from the train station. Please text (better than calling)

706 437 5749 and let us know what time your train will be getting in to Beverly Farms (not Beverly Station) so we can pick you up. Trains are not too frequent so please have a look ahead of time: Here is the schedule

The times we can pick you up are: 2:20 pm, 3:50pm, 4:51pm

Station for the Summer School: Beverly Farms

Train Line : Newburyport/Rockport Line (you want the Rockport Line)

Plane

Many of you are coming in via Logan airport. From the airport you have several options, but my recommendation is either Commuter Train or Uber.

Commuter train (see above)

Uber/Taxi : An Uber is estimated at around 60 – 80 dollars

Car service : For an individual these are around 85 all included. For up to groups of four, this can be cost effective solution at around $90 for four people excluding tip. I have used: http://www.bedriven.com/ The difficulty with a car service and a group of people is that they want one single pickup, which isn’t good for any kind of delays.

Rental Car: There are numerous rental car services at the airport, however, I do not see any need for a car while you are at the Summer School so I don’t think this is necessary.

Sharing rides : There are a number of you that have provided travel details and I am in the process of notifying people that might be able to share rides or Ubers.

Address and Check in

The address you are going to is:

376 Hale St, Beverly, MA 01915

Your Travel Details

Please fill out the form below and click submit when you know your travel details. I will aim to put people in contact with one another that are arriving at Logan Airport at similar times. This would allow small groups of people car-pool in car services.

    Lessons

All participants are eligible to have two lessons each. The lessons will run for 30 minutes.

Duos with other participants are welcome.

Please prepare your pieces as well as you can and bring a copy of the score for the teacher to work with. I would recommend two different pieces that you feel comfortable performing.

Lessons will be open to other participants so you may have a small audience while you work. If you are sitting in on someone else’s lesson please stay for the duration of that lesson without leaving as it can be distracting for others.

    Ensembles and Orchestra

Each morning you will be working with an instructor on small ensemble pieces. You will meet with the same group and instructor each morning. In the final student concert you will perform with that group and the large guitar orchestra.

Everyone will participate in the large guitar orchestra and the orchestra will rehearse each afternoon.

You will receive the music that you are playing on the first full day of the Summer School.

    Open Mic

There will be two open mic session because it has become so popular. This is a chance to perform on stage for all the other attendees. We will aim to do our best to record the performances but in past years there have been some technical glitches so we cannot guarantee that you will receive a video of your playing. Feel free to record your own performance should you wish to do so.

The performances need to be five minutes or less and if you perform in a duo or ensemble that will count as your performance. The only reason for this restriction is that we have so many people who want to perform!

The open mic sign up will happen prior to the summer school and the last date to let us know if you are going to play and what you are going to play is June 1st.
