Inspiration: Listening to Koshkin with Mäntylä

Inspiration: Listening to Koshkin with Mäntylä

posted on December 11, 2019

We are fortunate to have so many wonderful contemporary composers who not only write for but also play the guitar and so understand how to compose for the instrument. Russian composer Nikita Koshkin is one of our most celebrated guitarist-composers and he has written many wonderful pieces of music for the guitar. One of his recent compositions is “Finnish Rhapsody,” which I believe is dedicated to the fantastic 10-string (decacorde) guitarist from Finland, Mari Mäntylä. (This is not Koshkin’s first piece for 10-string guitar — his “Orpheo” for archlute also has a 10-string version, which Mäntylä has recorded.) Here Mäntylä performs “Finnish Rhapsody” with amazing control, power, finesse, and beauty. I hope it can bring you some inspiration!
